Chapter 8

Zeke ran through the thick, snow-covered evergreen forest wearing nothing but a towel around his furry, half-man-half-wolf body. He was sure he looked ridiculous, and, despite everything, part of him was grateful that that nearest town was several miles away. Zeke’s bare, furry feet plodded through the snow until his body finally collapsed from exhaustion. He crawled to a nearby tree and leaned his back against the sturdy trunk. He looked down at his furry hands, which shook. What sort of magic is this? he wondered. Why can’t I fully shift anymore? A shifter that couldn’t shift was a failure. A defective.

He’d finally had the courage to return home after two years in hopes of making amends with his family and proving himself, but all he did was make things even worse than before. He was truly alone from everything—and everyone—he knew. He dreaded returning to OUA. He’d either be the most feared student there, or the biggest laughingstock of his peers.

A bitter cold whisked over Zeke’s face, and he shivered. The Canadian winters were brutal—yet another thing he didn’t miss about home. He drew his knees to his chest. He was so far from the nearest town, he’d probably die of exposure if he attempted the treacherous trip. Then again, his chances of survival were slimming the longer he stayed huddled in the middle of the forest. His mind and body were exhausted; he didn’t know what to do. Maybe it’s best I go back to OUA. At least they have hot chocolate, he thought, trying to stop his chattering teeth. Returning to the school was only an incantation away. Fairy Godmother had taught him the Recall spell during his orientation.

He began uttering the words between chatters, but as the cold continued consuming him, he found it hard to concentrate on the words. He slowed his speech to individual syllables. The final words to the spell were on the tip of his tongue, when another chilly gust blew, picking up flakes of snow. The gust carried a strange burning cold that froze him instantly. Zeke’s body had gone completely numb. His weary form slumped over, and his eyelids drooped. Slowly, his exhausted mind slipped further away from consciousness. The world around him faded away into darkness. He took a slow, deep breath. So this is how I die…

Amid the pitch-blackness in his mind, Zeke noticed a small beam of white light shine down in front of him from somewhere above. The light cast a warm, illuminated ring on the ground, easing the chill in his bones. A ghostly image of a woman appeared in the light. The specter slowly solidified and stood before him, her black-painted lips turning crookedly to a sinister smirk.

Tilda! Zeke seethed at the strikingly beautiful dark-haired woman, who melded into the surrounding voids with her long black dress. His burning anger warmed him from the inside and reinvigorated him. Zeke tried to move his body, but an unknown force held him in place. He let out a growl in protest.
